All scouting activities require two Adult Registered Leaders to be present. You do not need to have any scouting experience to become a Cub Scout Leader. There is online training provided, as well as opportunities for advanced training through our Council. All leaders in the Pack are volunteers.
You want to start your own Den because a current one has become too large OR they don't meet at a time that fits your schedule.
You want to be a formal Assistant to the current Den Leader.
You want to help ensure scouting activities can occur by being the second Registered Adult present.
You want a formal position on our Pack Committee to volunteer throughout the year in administrative capacities for our Pack.
All prospective registered adult leaders need to notify the Pack Committee Chair before submitting an application online.
Please email CommitteeChair@pack68union.org.
All applicants are subject to the approval of our Chartered Organization Representative.
Before applying to be a leader, you must take Safeguarding Scouting Training. This was previously referred to as Youth Protection Training. Please also review the Scouter Code of Conduct.
To take the training, go to My.Scouting.org and create an account. (This might be separate from the account you use to renew your scout's membership.) You’ll receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number.
From the My.Scouting.org portal, you can launch the Safeguarding Scouting Training from the home page. You will receive a certificate upon completion. Email that to CommitteeChair@pack68union.org.
Submit your National & Council application and payment HERE. The cost to be a leader is currently $115 and reimbursement is available upon request if cost is an impediment to being a leader and the leadership position is required. Please email CommitteeChair@pack68union.org after you've submitted your application. Please note that it can take several days to process. Your application includes having a background check performed on you.
If the Pack is paying for an adult’s registration it is understood to be in exchange in good faith that registered adults will fulfill the volunteering roles they signed up for 12 months, for the well-being and functioning of the Pack. If a volunteer does not fulfill the obligations communicated to them, they should, in good faith, reimburse the Pack for what was paid to register them, so money can be spent towards a volunteer who can fulfill that role instead.
Every scout deserves a trained leader. Position specific training is available through your My.Scouting.org account. Once signed in, go to the Menu, and choose My Training. Under Training Courses by Program, choose Cub Scouts. Select the training relevant to your registered position.
Please note that the Safeguarding Scouting Training Refresher needs to be retaken yearly and Hazardous Weather Training needs to be retaken every 2 years.

Award recognition is for leaders too! If you'd like to earn the optional Den Leader Training Award and the Scouter's Training Award for Cub Scouts, you will need to attend in one calendar year at least 4 District Roundtables (Pioneer's is monthly on the 1st Wednesday of the month) OR attend University of Scouting, which is offered once a year by our Council in March. University of Scouting is a whole day seminar.
Optional online training that is relevant to Cub Scouts also includes: Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is an optional in-person training (with an online pre-req course) offered several times a year via our Council and we highly recommend that you take it. BALOO will help fulfill requirements for training to earn the Scouter's Training Award for Cub Scouts (see above).
Thank you for being a volunteer in our community!
Adults can be scouters too! Our Council provides all types of training opportunities throughout the year, as well as awards and badges for adult volunteers who go above and beyond.
